Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
