In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
