This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
